Here’s a fun one: after digging through the old 1987 typewritten screenplay, I realised something hilarious — the only things that survived into the modern novel were:

• an old scientific experiment hidden in a creepy cave called Cave Death,

• the moment it gets accidentally activated, and

• The main character suddenly gains Dream Reality powers.

• Everything else? Completely different.

In the screenplay, the Dream Reality powers were on a whole other level. The main character wasn’t just dreaming the past, present, and future — he was moving objects with his mind, starting a motorcycle without touching it, and basically one step away from becoming a full‑blown superhero. It was the 80s… subtlety wasn’t invented yet.

And the character names?

Out of the entire cast, only one name survived all the rewrites, revisions, and decades of evolution: Sam. Everyone else got renamed, rewritten, or replaced entirely. Sam is the lone survivor of the 1987 era — the last original cast member still standing.

So when you read the Special Edition, you’re not just getting the story — you’re getting a glimpse into the wonderfully chaotic, overpowered, slightly unhinged origins of the Dream Reality universe.
